How to Get Back into the Habit of Writing

Greetings to all! Thank you for making your way back to my blog after quite a long hiatus. Why were you on a hiatus, you ask? I was embarking on a little (BIG) journey called graduate school.

Of course when I enrolled in graduate school, I thought I would always be able to make time for writing. However, a full-time course load + a full-time job = no time for creative writing. I’m happy to report that it was worth it! Armed with a Master’s in Library Science and a job that I truly love with all my heart, I’m ready to turn my attention back towards my creative writing goals.

But it’s not that simple, right? I’ve been away from these characters for a long time, and while I tried to check in with them periodically, the deep connection that I had prior to my graduate program was seriously impacted. So, I’ve been doing a lot of this…

However, I’m here today to tell you that I’m not giving up. I’m determined to get back into the habit of writing and you are all going to hold me accountable! (Please?) Over the weekend I am going to figure out a daily block of time that I will dedicate to writing Monday through Friday…even if that means getting up super early like I used to years ago.

…and that’s not all! Here are some other things that I’m doing to help get back into the swing of writing:

Update My Novel Playlist: I gave it a listen the other day and realized that it needs some refreshing. I want to spend some time mindfully putting together soundtracks for my main characters.

Determine My Writing Space: I’ve been wondering if my writing space can be the same space I use for working from home. Recently, I’ve been putting all of my work things away at the end of the day and then taking them out the next. I’m hoping this is workable, but it might just be a matter of me going to write outside or in a different room sometimes.

Write Something Small: I currently have a 200+ page novel waiting for me. It feels kind of daunting to just start making major revisions. I’ve decided it would be a good creative exercise to write a small side-story that takes place in the same world with one of the characters. I think it will help to connect again.

There you have it, folks! My plan to get back on track. I’ll be back next week with more rambles and such.

Thanks for reading!
